Just because Wai-Con 2007 is just around the corner doesn't mean that we're not thinking about Wai-Con 2008! After much deliberation, deliveration and deluberation, we've come up with next year's theme -

Steampunk.

That's right, in the tradition of anime such as Trigun, Howl's Moving Castle, Steamboy, Full Metal Alchemist and Escaflowne (to but name a few), steampunk is the next theme for Wai-Con 2008.

To celebrate the theme's coronation, we're also announcing the start of the 2008 Mascot Competition! As with previous years, we're getting Australian artists to create and design our mascots each year. These mascots will be adorned on our programme book, signs, posters, things of obscene awesome. You're going to be eeeeeeverywhere!

What, you need more incentive? Fine. How about a Howl's Moving Castle set for the winner? To keep with the steampunk theme, the winner will receive a Howl's Moving Castle hardcover picture book as well as a Howl's Moving Castle DVD. Not to mention all of the notoriety that comes with being a winner. ;)

Competition closes 27th October 2007.

This competition is open to all members of the public. Following are the official guidelines:

Code:
1. The theme for the program cover for Wai-Con 2008 is "Steampunk".
2. You will be allowed to design a maximum of three characters and enter them all however please keep in mind that the size of the program cover is A5 which is half of an A4 page, however you will be allowed to enter up to 5 designs so you can use different characters in each design.
3. It is preferable that the designs to be in full colour however we will accept black and white line art designs however the designs must at least be inked.
4. Your image MUST include some sort of reference to either Wai-Con, Perth or Western Australia. For example, a badge with the Wai-Con eye or your character freefalling from the BankWest tower. This is to not only keep with the Western theme, but shows an individuality to the picture as well as proving that it is the artist's genuine artwork.
5. You are allowed a maximum of 5 entries per person.
6. The winning entry will become property of PANIC Inc. We reserve the right to make any changes we deem necessary for our purposes. However, this will not prevent the artist from displaying the artwork as their own in other areas. (eg. universities, Deviantart, etc.)
7. Submit your entries either on CD to P.O. Box 5611, Perth WA 6003; or via email to competitions@panic-wa.org.
8. Entries must be submitted via an unflattened PSD (Photoshop) file.
9. THE COMPETITION WILL CLOSE ON 27th OF OCTOBER 2007.  All entries must be received by this date to be valid for entry. No late entries will be admitted under any circumstances, so get in early!
10. The winner will be announced in November prior to the con and the prize will be mailed out. So please remember to include your name and address on your submission. Because without nowhere to send it to, I'm keeping your prize! Bwahahaha!

Hi, I was planning on entering, but I have a question about submission by email. You said 'unflattened Photoshop file', but I do my pictures at print quality with 10+ layers, so the filesize would be much too large to send unflattened. What is the maximum attachment size for Panic's email accounts?

... you know, I'm not sure. In fact, I remember having this problem last year and failing to rectify it. Hrmph, go team me. ;)

Tell you what - I'll change it to JPG submission, but if you do win an unflattened PSD must be available. I hope that works. :D

Steampunk generally refers to stuff that is set in an older time period (Victorian era, wild west) but with accelerated technology. The tech is generally based around steam and the contraptions themselves have lots of gears and clockwork and don't look sleek and modern.

They've listed a bunch of anime examples above... but Last Exile would be another one.

theme an mascots, use characters out of the formentioned anime i listed...

though i didn't say it directly though that's what i meant..

so sue me!! next time i'll state what i'm talking about 1st...

the bunch of animes i listed would fit into the theme preety well, though the others could also fit well into that genre as there is many options you could choose from...

I watch that much anime it's hard to keep a track of all characters names, as they become a blur after a while...

it's easier for me to remember series names than indevidual characters, so i list series..

sorry for your confusion!!!

First off, out of all those anime you listed only 2-3 would be considered Steampunk which was the theme decided for Wai-Con 2008. How the hell would Genshiken or Gundam fit into the steampunk genre?

This is a competition for original character design. If you copy a character's design from a series (ie. you draw a picture of Howl from Howl's Moving Castle) and enter it in the competition, then you'd be breaking copyright. This character drawn will be used in all our promotional materials for 2008 and if the animation studio who made the plagiarised character finds out -- that little joke about sueing? It won't be so funny after a while.

Here's a tip - read the freakin' thread before you post. Look at the content of the messages, understand what's going on in the thread before you react, look to see if what you've written is poignant (or in-date) and THEN respond. Don't press that post button until you think that everyone can understand what you're trying to communicate.

Oh, and use the Shift key. Capital letters are your friend - your 2nd grade teacher would probably be disappointed if she saw that.

Just a quick question on the rules, what of those of us who don't use photoshop, and do our drawings on paper anyway (so the work would be flat to start with)?

I don't quite understand - are you asking if you can submit a paper entry? Unfortunately not - the artwork would have to be digital in some form. Otherwise we cannot mass produce it.

Or are you asking if it has to be a PSD file? I did mention earlier in the forum that I am accepting JPGs, but a higher resolution PSD would need to be made available. I don't mind if you don't have a PSD, but a higher resolution format should definitely be held for us should it be requested (more commonly a format that includes layer data). You don't have to use Photoshop - GIMP or Paint Shop Pro are two examples of similar programming that can translate work into a higher resolution format.

Ah ok, no problems then.

EDIT: Completely missed that question being answered already... oops >.<

I think we were planning to make the decision at the GM, which is at 1pm. :P But it's up to Mike in the end. (Bakaneko)
